The solution

How it looks now:

  • The orange line represents a social care customer being assessed at the highest level of need and getting better
  • The purple box in the next diagram illustrates an all-too-typical care package, which carries on for a long time without review and is not designed to get the customer better
  • This is sometimes called 'a maintenance package'

How it could look:

  • The pink triangle in the lower graph represents the delivery of a totally personalised support plan
  • The level of support should be reduced as the customer's desired outcomes begin to be met
  • This shape is built into the support plan
  • In this idealised case there is a potential saving represented of 66%
  • Not all cases will follow anything like the orange curve but most are worth considering

'In our view, enlightened social care management will continually ask 'How can we make triangles out of boxes?'  It’s in everybody’s interests to do so and there are many creative ways to do it.

Gather together a few participants from the process and the ideas start flowing very quickly and as one social worker said, “Of course we should be doing this; this is what I came into social work to do!”.' Jeremy Labram, Principal, Charteris
