Going forward
- Customers and their families now see how they can regain or sustain their lives
- Providers 'got it' too and knew that if selected they would be expected to deliver this new type of saving, for which they would get rewarded
- Staff grasp the concept very quickly. Triangle diagrams on whiteboards and pieces of paper showed how easy it was to spread the word
- Some of these savings can then be reinvested in the most productive preventative measures.
- Case management and contract management has new purpose. Managers are starting to ask continually 'How can we make triangles out of boxes?'
- One social worker said 'This is what I came into the profession to do'
- Another care worker said 'We used to disable people: now we help them get their lives back'
- A highly acceptable balance between choice and control for the customer and 'sound advice' from the council has been found which secures economy of scale for the services being provided.
- The council is considering taking out around 40% from their non-residential care budget. They're not doing it because they have to, but because they believe they can and should.
